Recipe: Traditional Soda Bread

Soda bread has been an Irish staple food for centuries. Using only a small number of ingredients and easily cooked over an open fire, it was (and still is) a cheap and tasty way to eat. The bread is quite heavy and so it is filling and delicious served toasted with a lick of real butter, or dipped into authentic Irish stew.

This recipe is the same one that has been used by the Irish people for hundreds of years. It’s easy to make and great for the kids to get involved in.

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt


  1. Mix the dry ingredients
  2. Slowly stir in the buttermilk to form a dough
  3. Knead a little then make a ball
  4. Flatten with a rolling pin to 1cm thick
  5. Cut into quarters (we call these soda farls)
  6. Bake on a dry griddle or frying pan turning as necessary. Soda bread is done when golden and sound hollow when tapped.
