If you’re anything like me, meal planning and prep can be a real chore. I love to cook but I’m useless when it comes to thinking about healthy meals for the week. Grocery shopping usually results in lots of random ingredients that I try to throw together and there’s usually a lot of waste. So last year, after seeing an ad for Hello Fresh, I decided to give them a try.
How does it work?
Hello Fresh delivers a box of food to my door every Tuesday alongside 4 step-by-step recipe cards. Their aim is to combine healthy eating with convenience and make meal-planning and shopping easier.
What’s in my box?
The box contains all the ingredients for four adults for four meals (you can customise your subscription depending on the number of people in your house and how many days you want meals for). The ingredients are measured to exactly what you need so there’s no faffing around with scales and measures.
Each week they release a list of meals on their app and you choose the meals you want to have delivered. There is a great variety including kid-friendly, fast cook, vegetarian/vegan and even a premium option if you want something a bit more special.
What if I’m not in for delivery?
Any food that needs to be refrigerated is stored inside an insulated bag with blocks of ice so the box can be left on the doorstep for up to eight hours.
How easy are the meals to cook?
All of the meals come with a very simple step-by-step menu card and everything you need to make the meal from start to finish. You don’t need any particular level of skill in the kitchen at all. The only real difference in the recipes is the length of time they can take to prepare. If you choose from the ‘Rapid’ range, meals are usually only 15 minutes or so to get on the plate. Other recipes can take up to 45 minutes.
Will my kids eat it?
Hello Fresh is very good at labeling the recipes that are kid-friendly based on feedback from their customers. That said, my kids will eat almost anything so we never worry much about that.
What about portion sizes?
We get a Family Box which is 4 meals for 4 adults. We are a household of 2 adults and 3 small children and there is always plenty of food and quite often leftovers that my husband takes for lunch the next day.
Quality of Ingredients?
I find the quality of the ingredients to be very good. The meat, in particular, is very good quality and sourced from UK farmers. I tend to check the use by dates as soon as the box comes in so I know which meal to prepare first. As all the ingredients are fresh they don’t have a long shelf life.
Isn’t it expensive?
I’ve actually found that using Hello Fresh has saved me money. I pay £47.70 per week which works out at around £2.38 per meal per person (even less if we’re using leftovers for lunches). When I wasn’t using the service, I was spending much more on groceries and banging my head against a wall trying to meal plan for the week. Now I only have to think of two dinners per week (Hello Fresh handles four days and we eat at my in-laws on a Sunday), plus lunch food and snacks, etc.
Is it as good as it sounds?
I was hesitant to start using Hello Fresh in the beginning but I’ve now been a loyal customer for over a year now. I did take a break for a month when we were moving house and I hated going back to meal planning. Plus my grocery bill rocketed! I really love the variety of the menus and the flexibility it offers (we can decrease or increase the number of meals we want every week). Their customer service is really excellent too which is always a bonus.
I really don’t think I could go back to life before Hello Fresh. It makes my life so much easier and I no longer spend chunks out of my Sunday having to think up healthy meal ideas and planning grocery lists.
